Happy Wednesday readers!
This week has been nuts online and off for me. Unfortunately, in all the hubbub I'm posting this later than I normally would like.
There are some exciting things coming your way come Friday's podcast which I have been preparing for which deviated from my original plans, but I'm still excited to record soon. So please keep your eyes open for it. Hopefully you enjoy it when it comes online!
As aways, I'm grateful for your time and attention as we dive a little deeper into the stories reported today.
Thank you!
1.) “Are you kidding, China?!”
As reported last week, we had quite a lot of drama (and memes) out of the Chinese spy balloon story. Since then we have only been learning more about our foreign visitor.
And although many thought the balloon had self destruction capabilities, it is now confirmed in a report from CBS that the balloon did not carry any sort of explosive capability.
Then came the reports of multiple balloons and hovering objects being detected which about broke the internet. Quoting from the CBS article:
“Three more objects were spotted over U.S. and Canadian airspace. On Friday, Feb. 10, U.S. officials downed a "high-altitude object" off the coast of Alaska. An unidentified object was shot down in Canadian airspace the next day, and the U.S. military shot down another object spotted over the Great Lakes region that Sunday, Feb. 12.”
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby spoke on the developments over the past couple of days as we are still in an effort of recovering these additional unidentified objects. Although we have ruled out that these objects belonged to the American government, investigations thus far have not indicated where they came from.
From CBS. Sailors assigned to Assault Craft Unit 4 prepare material recovered in the Atlantic Ocean from a high-altitude balloon for transport to federal agents at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Feb. 10, 2023.

We have also since learned that we are hardly the only pitstop for these surveillance devices. Along with Canada and parts of Latin America, Japan has also reported that there were Chinese surveillance balloons that entered their airspace multiple times in recent years.
NBC reported a statement made by Japan's defense ministry where they said the following:
“As a result of further analysis of balloon-shaped flying objects confirmed over Japan’s airspace in the past, including those sighted in November 2019, June 2020, and September 2021, we have concluded that the balloons in question are strongly presumed to be unmanned reconnaissance balloons flown by China.”
In all this continued commotion, China still stands by their public statement that these balloons veered off course and made their way to the heartland of the States.
